Are about 50.000 the migrants arrived on the Italian coast since the beginning of the year.

Despite the alarmism of the media, the real emergency is not about numbers. The only emergency is in fact humanitarian.2/3 of the people arriving have the right to asylum. Migration flows are increasingly characterized by people fleeing from war and dictatorships. People from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Syria escape looking for international protection.

The « geography » of the phenomenon has changed: 93% of departures takes place from Lybia, despite the total instability of the country and the 95%  of the arrivals takes places in a different location from the island of Lampedusa, mostly in Sicilian ports of Pozzallo, Porto Empedocle, Augusta, Messina and Palermo.

Since the beginning of Mare Nostrum, launched by Italian authorities as a « military and humanitarian » operation, after the tragic shipwreck occurred on 3rd October 2013 near the Lampedusa Coast, 27.790 people have been rescued but, Mare nostrum can not be the solution.

Eliminate the causes of forced migration taking international responsabilities, create humanitarian and legal channel for migration are the only ways to combat criminal organizations and human traffickers.
